Starting in 2026, the new Energiewet will come into force step by step. It marks the biggest change in Dutch energy legislation since 1998.
The Act aims to accelerate the transition to renewable energy and promote smarter use of the congested electricity grid. For businesses, this raises important questions: will it lead to more rules and obligations, or will it create new opportunities to make independent choices about energy use?
On 30 September 2025, Jan Erik Janssen, partner at Stek Lawyers, took part as an expert panellist in a webinar organised by Change Inc. and Eneco on this new legislation. Together with Jinny Moe Soe Let (Netbeheer Nederland) and Tjebbe H. Yska (Eneco Business), he discussed what these developments mean for organisations active in the energy market.
The Energiewet replaces the current Gaswet and Elektriciteitswet, bringing all regulations together in one comprehensive law. This new framework better reflects today’s energy landscape — with more renewable generation, stronger collaboration between companies and a greater focus on flexible energy use.
During the webinar, the panellists discussed topics such as the changing roles of energy companies, the pressure on the electricity grid, and the opportunities for new partnerships and local energy projects.
