Yesterday, Stichting Massaschade & Consument officially filed a collective action against Sony on behalf of Dutch PlayStation users.
Following the successful Fair PlayStation campaign, the collective action challenges Sony’s exclusionary control over digital pricing and distribution within the PlayStation ecosystem. Based on the economic study accompanying the claim, Dutch consumers have been significantly overpaying for digital games compared to their physical equivalents.
With over 20,000 Dutch gamers already registered to participate, it is evident this issue resonates across the gaming community in the Netherlands. This action echoes similar lawsuits in the UK and Portugal targeting the closed PlayStation Store and its inflated pricing models.
By bringing this case, the Stichting Massaschade & Consument together with Stek Advocaten, Geradin Partners, and Milberg Amsterdam are showcasing on how dominant platform practices can disadvantage consumers. If successful, the collective action will pave the way for fairer competition and pricing in the digital gaming world.
